Trump Walks Political Tightrope on Diddy Pardon Decision

Donald Trump has once again spoken on the possibility of his being involved in the rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal case. During a conversation with Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, August 1, the 45th president was asked if he was going to grant a pardon for Combs, following his conviction last month.

Sean Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, was found guilty on a single federal charge of transportation with intent to commit prostitution. On the other hand, he was acquitted on other, more severe charges, which include sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial took more than seven weeks and was filled with testimonies and drama, including from singer Cassie Ventura, who accused Combs of abuse and trafficking during their former relationship. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Asked if he would pardon Combs, Trump replied: “Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent. He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

The former president also added, “We were very friendly. I got along with him great. But he used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

Trump had previously also spoken on whether he would pardon Combs on May 16. During the press briefing, in the Oval Office, he was asked a similar question by Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. Trump’s response was almost the same as that of the August 1 Newsmax interview. He once again promised to look at the facts before he made any decision. He also once again said that he wouldn’t be affected by whether Combs liked him or not.

“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump said in reply to Doocy’s question. He added, “If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”

The federal charges facing Combs were the result of a two-year federal investigation. The July conviction against him on 46 charges has seen him face seven weeks of trial in Brooklyn. Although he was cleared on the most serious of charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering, the remaining federal charge is still a serious one. As a result of the July conviction, Combs faces a prison term of up to 20 years. His sentencing is currently slated for October 3.

The controversial trial, which involved Combs, raised more questions about celebrity justice, presidential powers, and whether the relationships between the two would affect decisions of clemency. Trump has once again raised the issue, and by his public comments regarding the Brooklyn-born rapper, he appears willing to take a look at the case.

“He was celebrating a victory,” Trump said of Combs during the interview. “But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”

A clip of Trump’s full comments from the Newsmax interview with Finnerty was posted on X (formerly Twitter). It has since elicited reactions from political watchers, fans of hip-hop music, and those in the legal industry. However, only time will tell if the 45th president of the United States will finally grant a pardon for Combs.

For now, attention has shifted to October, when the Brooklyn rapper will appear in court for sentencing. Until then, all the speculation of Trump coming to the rescue is sure to continue.
