Gorn War Reaches Climax in Strange New Worlds Season 3

Paramount+ released the official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. The premiere of the third season of the series is scheduled for July 17, 2025. A couple of months ago, in April, the studio shared a very short teaser, but fans of the series have already been able to get an idea of what awaits the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise on the next stage.

In the second season, the Enterprise crew was left on the brink, forced to choose between Starfleet’s orders to retreat and the crew members and other survivors taken hostage by the Gorn as they invaded a Federation colony world. Season 2 episode 10 ended on a cliffhanger, with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) choosing the bolder course of action. Last October, at New York City Comic-Con, the studio shared a teaser from the season 3 premiere that picks up directly from the previous season’s finale. The seven-second look at the season premiere showcased another intense, high-energy space battle against the fan-favorite Star Trek villains, the Gorn.

The official trailer that Paramount+ released on Friday features a continuation of that footage and confirms that this will be a season finale with the Gorn while also teasing a wide variety of other threats and new adventures. Paramount+ describes the season as, “While the fate of the Federation rests in their hands, a new nemesis will test their limits and loyalty, forcing each of them to the breaking point.” In the same statement, the studio teases that fans should expect a number of new types of episodes that aren’t typical Trek, including some elements of faith, others of duty, a few of romance, some of comedy, and one or two of mystery. It is confirmed that there will be a new villain this season who will test the crew’s skills and push them to their limits. Genres not seen in other Star Trek series will also be present.

The third season will feature the show’s main and recurring cast members returning to their roles. Cillian O’ Sullivan will be joining the cast of the series as Dr. Roger Korby. Michael Strong previously played Korby as a main character in Star Trek: The Original Series. In the Strange New Worlds timeline, Dr. Korby is a medical archaeologist, a well-known archaeologist, and the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). The announcement of O’ Sullivan’s character may cause many questions about his disappearance, but viewers will soon get answers. The wedding ceremony that was planned when Chapel and Korby were reunited at the end of season 2 will have to be postponed once more since Chapel is no longer alone. The nurse and Spock (Ethan Peck) have managed to get closer and even to reach romantic levels.

Patton Oswalt and Rhys Darby are also joining the cast of the series as guest stars. Both are known to the viewers of the Star Trek franchise for their comedy work and will bring that to the series. The teaser shared in April showed many types of episodes, from high-action space adventure to comedic side stories. The new trailer also confirms that a variety of genres will be used in the upcoming season, as it shows the crew bonding, getting into situations involving sensitive romantic subplots, and cleaning up after explosive science experiments.

Episode 1 shows Kirk (Paul Wesley) as captain for a moment, something the trailer teases will be a big experience for him. Kirk’s future role in the season’s events is not yet clear, but what is clear is that he will not remain in that seat for very long. Pike can be heard addressing Kirk in the chair, saying, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.” Kirk’s future experiences in the pilot and season 3 events are likely to shape his character, which will be relevant for the next stage of the main character’s development in future Star Trek series and films.

The trailer ends with a comedic beat, which is a rarity for Trek, but well-performed ones such as this are quickly making a name for themselves for the show. Oswalt’s Vulcan is with Spock, where the latter is showing the former how to do a “high five.” First, Spock successfully performs the task with Oswalt, but then he yanks the classic “too slow” on his colleague as they try to go “down low.” The perplexed Vulcan responds with, “Why would you do that?” but Spock is just as responsive and deadpan with his Vulcan logic of, “Because you are too slow.”
