Although Windows Copilot is making headlines, the company is actually using artificial intelligence to improve commonplace tools like Paint, Snipping Tool, Photos, and Camera. Microsoft is reportedly testing several AI features that will subtly enhance users’ experiences with these venerable apps, according to Windows Central. These are useful improvements intended to address issues in the real world, not ostentatious demonstrations or futuristic toys.

Among these features, the use of optical character recognition, or OCR, stands out. With the help of this tool, users will be able to directly extract text from images. This implies that you can highlight and copy the text in a screenshot of a web page, product label, or handwritten note, just like you would in a Word document. Don’t type again. No need to install any software. An image can be transformed into editable content with a few clicks. It’s the kind of enhancement that becomes a natural part of your everyday routine and soon leaves you wondering how you managed to live without it.

Apple has had a similar feature for some time, and it functions well on Macs and iPhones, so Microsoft is not the first company to do this. However, having OCR integrated into Snipping Tool and Photos will be a significant improvement for Windows users who frequently use screenshots and scanned documents. The ability of Photos to identify and separate objects, people, or animals in photos is another AI feature that is currently being developed. But now, AMD’s new 7040-series chips and Intel’s upcoming Meteor Lake CPUs are adding NPUs to more traditional PCs, which will make AI features accessible on a much wider scale.

The benefit of NPUs is that they allow AI functions to run locally. That’s important for speed, privacy, and efficiency. Currently, NPU capabilities in Windows 11 are pretty limited—mostly used for video call enhancements like background blur and noise cancellation. But these new app-level upgrades show that Microsoft has much bigger plans. It’s not about reinventing how people use their PCs. It’s about making what already works… just work better. And that’s the real power of this approach.
