Chaos Reigns in Apple TV+’s Foundation Season 3

Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for Foundation season 3, its “premium visual effects series” reimagining of Isaac Asimov’s renowned science fiction narrative of the same name. The trailer depicts a galaxy on the edge of chaos, a new crisis on an unimaginable scale, and the rise of one of Asimov’s most legendary and powerful villains—the Mule. Season 3, which will air weekly from July 11 through September 12, 2025, is based on the Empire Trilogy, a series of novels by Asimov that directly followed the events of the Foundation Trilogy.

Despite the differences between the Foundation series and Asimov’s original works, the show has consistently used time leaps as one of its structural principles. Season 1 ended with a 138-year jump forward, while season 2 advanced through the Second Crisis, a critical turning point in which war seemed imminent between the Foundation and the Galactic Empire that rules the galaxy. The Foundation proved more radical in its tactics than its predecessors, weaponizing religious propaganda to expand its dominion. The “Mentalics” (human-like beings with potent psionic abilities) and their secretive colony were also introduced.

Season 3, on the other hand, will leap forward an additional 152 years from season 2 and set the stage in what is known in the Foundation books as the Third Crisis. In Apple TV+’s official description of the upcoming season, the Foundation is “more firmly entrenched and powerful than ever” after its formation. However, “the once-stalwart Cleonic Dynasty, in control of the galactic empire for ten thousand years, is crumbling from within.” When faced with new dangers from internal and external sources, the two enemy powers are forced into an uneasy partnership. But nothing, not even their tentative alliance, can stop the coming darkness: The Mule’s arrival.

“The Mule,” as the trailer says, “Is the most successful warlord in history and a dangerous manipulator of the human psyche. He can turn the tide of war… and change the galaxy forever.” The trailer’s ominous message is delivered by Hari Seldon: “Centuries ago, when we predicted the fall of the galaxy, the Foundation was created to save humanity. But the coming darkness was always the turning point.” The trailer’s final shot belongs to Gaal Dornick, who has been moving up in the ranks: “We’re out of time.”

The Mule is Asimov’s mentalic warlord, and in the show, he will be played by Pilou Asbæk. The Mule is portrayed as a force that can both instill terror and convert adversaries into friends, captivate the masses with an appeal, or change the course of history with a careful injection of chemicals. He is, in many ways, a one-man war machine that poses a potent threat to the Foundation and the Empire. “I can turn enemies into allies. Hate into love. Resistance into loyalty,” he says with confidence in the trailer. “It only takes a little nudge.” The trailer also has plenty of action scenes like explosions, battles, and massive city-destroying earthquakes.

Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann will all return as the three imperial clones, Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk, respectively. Series mainstay Jared Harris will return as Hari Seldon, while Lou Llobell and Laura Birn will return as Gaal Dornick and the powerful and enigmatic android Eto Demerzel, respectively.

Season 3 of Foundation will also see an expansion in cast members to match the more ambitious scope of the third book’s events. Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, a fervent devotee of Hari Seldon and a self-taught psychohistorian; Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, the governor of a planet populated by psychics; and Cherry Jones as Foundation ambassador Quent are among the new additions. Brandon P. Bell will play Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen will play Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern will play Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis will play flamboyant intellectual celebrity Magnifico Giganticus, Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing will play Song, and Leo Bill will play Mayor Indbur.

The End of Psychohistory?

The idea of “psychohistory”—a hypothetical interdisciplinary science that combines sociology and mathematics to determine the future course of human history—is at the heart of Foundation. The Foundation works as a combination of a selective breeding program, a slave trade, and a strategy for mass mind manipulation. The Mule’s talents, which allow him to sway both logic and emotional reaction, are what now put psychohistory in jeopardy. The core elements are in place for a face-off of epic dimensions. But it’s clear from the trailer that the war between the Empire and the Foundation won’t be the only thing shaking the stars. With the Mule on the loose, everything could be at stake.

Visually, the series appears to be up to its word. Space vistas are expansive, civilizations are elaborately designed, and the stakes are high in the action sequences. But the trailer’s most memorable moments are its character moments, which convey an emotional resonance not seen in the previous two seasons. The Empire and the Foundation can come together, but will they? Will psychohistory, with its strictly rational precepts and historical predictions, be able to overcome the Mule’s assault on both fact and emotion? Is there a future for the galaxy other than chaos?

Season 3 appears to be up to the task, with higher stakes, more complex characters, and even more epic world-building. For viewers who enjoy speculative fiction and epic television series alike, a lot is at stake in the new season, which will air weekly episodes starting July 11. So, after two seasons of building the parts of Seldon’s plan, season 3 will test whether the plan can withstand the impossible.
