Google begins the official distribution of Android 16 following months of beta tests and industry conjecture. The update arrives initially for Pixel phone users and other Android users will receive it within the coming weeks or months.

Pixel devices will receive the OTA update today. Google has posted system images and update files on its developer site for quick access. There’s no urgency to upgrade because Android 16 initially provides only a basic range of new features.

What’s New in Android 16?

Android 16 refines the notification experience. Android 7.0 Nougat introduced bundled notifications but Android 16 requires their use. The latest Android update combines multiple notifications from a single app into one expandable alert to minimize visual clutter and increase visual clarity.

The update also introduces live update notifications. Rideshare and delivery apps were the first platforms to offer real-time status bar updates with these notifications. When users tap these notifications they see a pop-up displaying real-time progress. Google collaborated with Samsung and OnePlus to incorporate this feature into their respective systems such as Now Bar and Live Alerts.

The Advanced Protection feature which was originally limited to individual accounts now covers every Android 16 device. After activation this feature blocks 2G network connections restricts access to insecure websites disables access to system data through USB ports resulting in better device security.

The Emoji Kitchen offers a generative AI feature that lets users create unique emojis through the Pixel Studio app.

▶ Developer-Focused Enhancements

Android 16 (API level 36) includes hidden enhancements that improve the experience for app developers. Developers who target this version should expect their apps to automatically adjust to fit larger displays which benefits tablet and foldable smartphone owners. The update provides advanced camera capabilities through motion photos and hybrid auto-exposure alongside night mode detection and HDR screenshot support.

Google persists in enforcing stricter background process limitations to improve efficiency but these changes could affect certain applications.

Pixel Drop: New Features for Pixel Users

The release of Android 16 will also bring a new Pixel Drop feature from Google. The update does not contain many new features but brings several important improvements.

Pixel VIPs: A revamped “favorite contacts” feature. The dedicated home screen widget for VIPs displays recent messages from Messages and WhatsApp as well as birthdays and shared locations among other features. This feature enables them to operate outside of the Do Not Disturb mode.

Accessibility Improvements: The magnifier app now supports improved compatibility with hearing aids while offering enhanced live search features.

Expanded Availability: The Expressive Captions feature is now available to users in the UK, Canada and Australia.

Big Features Coming Later This Year

Google has started to extend time intervals between Android feature releases to an unprecedented degree. Material 3 Expressive which serves as a colorful design refresh won’t debut with this launch. Pixel devices will get the new feature later this year but developers need to start updating their apps now.

Another anticipated addition is the desktop mode. The feature which enables tablets to operate floating windows like a desktop OS emerged from a joint development with Samsung. The feature for phones and foldables requires an external display connection to function. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold device will not have support for on-device windowing functionality. Google’s phones will deliver complete functionality while other Android 16 devices may just support basic screen mirroring depending on the OEM.

A quiet shift: Google has altered its Android release timeline. Android 16 introduces a spring release schedule which bypasses the traditional fall hardware launch updates and adds a minor feature update later in the year.
