Huge Increase in Nashville Voter Turnout Compared to 2022 Midterms

The start of early voting in Nashville has seen a remarkable surge in participation, with nearly 1,400% more voters casting ballots on the first day compared to the last midterm elections in 2022. This significant increase reflects heightened engagement in this year's election cycle.

Governor’s Race Drives Early Voting

One of the main factors fueling this spike in voter turnout is the governor's race. With Governor Bill Lee reaching his term limit, Tennessee voters are choosing a new governor for the first time since 2018. The absence of an incumbent has contributed to increased voter enthusiasm and activity during the early voting period.

Comparison to Previous Gubernatorial Election

While the current turnout eclipses the 2022 midterms, it remains 80% lower than turnout on the first day of the 2018 gubernatorial race. The 2022 midterm ballot did not feature an open seat for governor, helping explain the dramatic year-over-year difference.

Voters Express Diverse Motivations

WPLN News spoke with voters in both Davidson and Cheatham counties to gauge their motivations. Many, including Michelle Penucci of Nashville, expressed support for Jerri Green, the Democratic candidate for governor. Others noted a lack of enthusiasm for specific candidates, choosing instead to vote along party lines. Cheatham County resident Jack O’Brada cited opposition to Republican candidate U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn as a primary motivator, saying, “I hope she gets beat.” Independent voter Joey Allen emphasized the importance of voting in line with personal beliefs and concerns about national security.

Redistricting and Congressional Races

The newly redrawn 6th Congressional District, which now includes parts of Nashville’s Hillsboro Village, is also on voters’ minds. Michelle Penucci cited her support for both Jerri Green and Mike Croley, who is facing state Rep. Johnny Garrett for the U.S. House seat. Penucci also voiced concerns about gerrymandering, calling the recent redistricting “outrageous.”

Early Voting and Election Day Details

Early voting in Tennessee runs through October 29, providing residents with ample time to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day on November 3. Official statewide turnout figures have yet to be released, but the substantial first-day numbers in Nashville highlight the importance of this year's races and the effects of changes to Tennessee's congressional districts.
